Chronic illness

What is chronic illness?

A chronic illness is a condition that lasts for a long period of time, often for the rest of a person's life. Unlike acute illnesses that resolve quickly, chronic diseases are persistent and require ongoing management. Some examples of common chronic illnesses are diabetes, arthritis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic pain, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and lupus.

Diagnosing a chronic condition can be challenging as symptoms may develop gradually over time. Doctors rely on a combination of patient history, physical exams, lab tests and imaging to identify chronic diseases. Once diagnosed, most chronic conditions cannot be cured, but many can be managed through lifestyle changes, therapy, medication or even surgery.

Living with chronic illness often means learning to cope with symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, digestive issues and more on a regular basis. It can greatly impact one's quality of life and ability to function. However, with the right treatment plan and support system, many people learn to successfully adapt to challenges of chronic disease. For instance, pulmonary rehabilitation helps COPD patients regain strength and endurance.
